6-Step Print Quality Checklist I Use Before Accepting Any Job—From Komori Presses to Desktop Printers

Every print quality problem I've ever been called about is really a process problem. It might be a Komori Lithrone running a packaging job, or a $300 desktop HP printer that won't print in color. The equipment is different, but the failure logic isn't.

I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at a commercial printing equipment supplier. I review every press before it reaches customers—roughly 200 units a year. That sounds strict, but a small deviation on one press can cost a shop an entire shift.

If you don't have a spectrophotometer, use a visual check under standard light. Also confirm your image resolution. Commercial offset is usually 300 DPI at final size. A 3000 x 2000 pixel image at 300 DPI gives a maximum print size of 10 by 6.67 inches. If the file is lower resolution than that, no driver or press adjustment can add detail that doesn't exist.

Digital presses have their own calibration routines, and they're not inherently better or worse than offset—they're just different. Each process needs its own verification target.

Step 4: Verify consumables and spare parts before changing parts

Change one variable at a time. That's the hardest rule to follow when a customer is waiting.
