The Print Equipment Questions I Get All the Time
Quick context: I’m the office administrator for a 60-person commercial print shop. I handle equipment and supply purchasing—roughly $400,000 a year across 11 vendors. That means Komori press parts, service contracts, operator training, and more than one “what about a 3D printer?” conversation with our owner. I’m not an engineer or a pressman. I’m the buyer who sees the invoices afterward.
1. What is a Komori offset press?
An offset press prints by transferring ink from a plate to a rubber blanket, then onto paper. That middle step is the “offset.” It keeps the plate from wearing down quickly and gives clean coverage even on coated stock.
Komori is a major name in sheetfed offset, and the Lithrone series is their best-known line. The KHS Hyper System automates a lot of the setup—ink density, registration, paper size changes—so crews can switch between jobs faster. Our make-ready times dropped by maybe 40% when we upgraded. Give or take; I’d have to check the production logs.
File specs still matter, too. For commercial offset, the industry-standard minimum is 300 DPI at final size. If an image looks fine on a screen but is only 72 DPI, don’t expect the press to fix it.
2. What does a Komori press operator do?
A Komori press operator sets up the press for each job, balances ink and water, pulls sheets during the run, checks color against the proof, and catches small problems before they become expensive ones. That role is more important than most buyers think.
This is where I have a scar. On our second Lithrone purchase, I argued that we could skip factory operator training to save a few thousand dollars. “Same press, just newer,” I said. One month later, an unfamiliar warning light was ignored, a blanket got nicked, and the service call plus downtime cost more than the training would have. Now operator training is a line item in every press quote I review.
3. How much is a 3-D printer?
The short answer: a 3-D printer can cost anywhere from about $200 to well over $50,000. Based on vendor listings I pulled in January 2025, the tiers break down roughly like this:
- Entry-level FDM: $200–$600. Fine for small parts if you’re willing to fiddle.
- Mid-range workhorse: $1,000–$3,500, with auto bed leveling, a heated enclosure, and fewer surprises.
- Industrial and large-format: five figures and up, plus installation and training.
Budget for more than the machine. Filament, spare nozzles, ventilation, and the hours your team spends learning slicing software add up faster than the marketing pages suggest. I’d set aside 15–20% of the purchase price for accessories and replacement parts.
4. Can a 3D printer print multiple colors?
Yes, but the phrase “multiple colors” usually means color by layer, not color anywhere on the part. A single-nozzle printer can pause while you swap filament, but the result is stacked color zones. For true multi-color in one print, you need multiple extruders or a filament-switching unit. That adds cost and calibration time.
We paid that tax once. I saved around $400 by choosing a budget “multi-color capable” machine, then watched close to $900 in wasted filament and failed prints disappear before we replaced it. Penny-wise, pound-foolish. That’s me in a nutshell.
And if the goal is brand-color matching, a 3D printer still isn’t the answer. Color-critical work goes on our Komori, using the Pantone system. A 3D printer can land close to a selected filament color, but it won’t hold the same Delta E tolerance that a Pantone-matched offset proof is expected to meet.
5. Is a 3D printing machine for beginners worth it for a print shop?
For a shop that has never owned one, a beginner-friendly 3D printing machine can pay for itself if it’s used for prototypes, packaging mockups, and small replacement parts. We run ours almost weekly for those jobs, because it beats waiting on outside suppliers with high minimum orders.
Look for automatic bed leveling, clear documentation, and an active user community. A printer with preconfigured profiles in common slicing software will get your team to that first successful part faster. The cheapest kit is not the cheapest once you count lost afternoons.
Just don’t frame it as a replacement for the Komori. A 3D printer won’t run 10,000 two-sided brochures at 15,000 impressions an hour.
6. Do we need a Komori offset press or a 3D printer?
The wrong question is “Which is better?” The right question is “What are we producing?”
Offset is a volume machine. Commercial setup pricing guides from January 2025 put plate making around $15–$50 per color, so you want that cost spread across many sheets. Once it is, the cost per copy is a fraction of a cent. 3D printing has no plate cost and no minimum quantity, so it wins for one-off pieces, mockups, and design iterations.
In March 2024, a retail client needed a 2,000-piece brochure and three physical package mockups in the same week. The presses handled the brochure; the 3D printer handled the mockups. If we had treated this as an either-or decision, we’d have missed the deadline.
So buy the machine that removes your biggest bottleneck. Train people on it. And don’t let anyone sell you a “one machine does everything” story. In a commercial print shop, efficiency comes from having the right tool for each job—and knowing which job is which.
