When to use this checklist
Use this if you run or approve a Komori offset job—whether it is a 50-piece test run or a 25,000-sheet production order. I am a quality and brand compliance manager at a commercial printing company. I review every offset job before it reaches customers—roughly 200+ jobs a year. I rejected about 11% of first deliveries in 2024 for color drift, trim, or stock mismatch. Most of those issues were catchable before the press ran.
This is an 8-step checklist, plus common mistakes at the end. It works for small orders too. We do not have a minimum order volume for quality control. I don't have hard data on industry-wide defect rates, but based on our 5 years of orders, my sense is quality issues affect about 8-12% of first deliveries. Small doesn't mean unimportant—it means potential.
Step 1: Confirm the job ticket against the proof—not your memory
Pull the signed proof and the job ticket side by side. Check stock name, caliper, ink set, Pantone callouts, and finishing. If the ticket says 100 lb text and the proof was approved on 80 lb text, stop. That is not a pressroom problem. It is a pre-press problem.
For brand-critical colors, industry standard color tolerance is Delta E < 2. Delta E of 2-4 is noticeable to trained observers; above 4 is visible to most people. Reference: Pantone Color Matching System guidelines. If your proof is outside that, do not tell the press operator to “make it look right.”
Step 2: Check stock before ink hits paper
Measure the stock, not just the label. Paper weight equivalents are approximate, but useful: 20 lb bond = 75 gsm, 24 lb bond = 90 gsm, 80 lb text = 120 gsm, 100 lb text = 150 gsm, 80 lb cover = 216 gsm, 100 lb cover = 270 gsm. Note: conversions are approximate.
Check grain direction, coating, and moisture. Honestly, I'm not sure why some Komori offset jobs drift more on humid days while others stay tight. My best guess is it comes down to how the stock was stored before it reached the press. If the paper feels damp or wavy, condition it before running.
Step 3: Verify resolution and logo files
Standard print resolution requirements: commercial offset printing needs 300 DPI at final size. Large format viewed from distance can work at 150 DPI. Newsprint is usually 170-200 DPI. These are industry-standard minimums.
Use the formula: print size in inches = pixel dimensions ÷ DPI. A 3000 × 2000 pixel image at 300 DPI gives 10 inches maximum width and 6.67 inches maximum height. If your logo printer is a small desktop inkjet, do not use that output as a contract proof for a Komori offset run. Check embedded logos at 100% zoom. A soft logo is expensive to fix after plating.
Step 4: Run a color target and measure, don't eyeball
Pantone colors may not have exact CMYK equivalents. For example, Pantone 286 C, a common corporate blue, converts to approximately C:100 M:66 Y:0 K:2 in CMYK, but the printed result may vary by substrate and press calibration. Reference: Pantone Color Bridge guide.
Measure with a spectrophotometer at the start, middle, and end of the run. If you only check the first sheet, you are approving a sample, not a run. The most frustrating part of print quality: the same color can pass at 9 a.m. and fail at 3 p.m. You'd think a calibrated Komori offset press would hold forever, but ink, water, and room conditions change.
Step 5: Check registration and sheet travel on the Komori
On a Komori offset press, check gripper marks, tail edge, and fan-out. Look for doubling, slur, and ghosting. If repeat register drifts, inspect Komori printing press parts—gripper pads, feeder belts, suction heads, and delivery grippers. Keep critical spares on the shelf. Waiting three days for a $40 part can cost a $4,000 job.
We even print small alignment jigs on a pursa 3d printer for shop use. That is a convenience, not a replacement for OEM-spec Komori printing press parts. Do not let a printed plastic jig become a permanent fix for a worn gripper.
Step 6: Inspect trim, fold, and bindery with the same standard
Check trim against the final size. US Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches, Legal is 8.5 × 14 inches, and Tabloid is 11 × 17 inches. Business card sizes: US Standard is 3.5 × 2 inches, European is 85 × 55 mm, Japanese is 91 × 55 mm. Small format jobs still need the same trim check.
For folded pieces, check that the fold cracks the coating, not the ink. For bound pieces, check creep and spine square. This is where a 100-piece run can embarrass you just as fast as a 10,000-piece run.
Step 7: Package and label so the next person can verify
Keep a signed sample with the job number, date, operator, stock, ink set, and any deviations. Label the cartons with the same information. If a customer calls about color, you need a baseline. If you cannot find the approved sample, you are arguing from memory. Memory loses.
I knew I should get written confirmation on a deadline once, but thought 'we've worked together for years.' That was the one time the verbal agreement got forgotten. Now every contract includes written spec requirements. That applies to $200 orders and $20,000 orders.
Step 8: Get written approval for any deviation—before shipping
If the paper is 2 gsm off, the blue is Delta E 3.1, or the fold is 0.5 mm out, write it down and ask the customer. Do not let a verbal “it's fine” become a return. I have mixed feelings about rush premiums. On one hand, they can feel like gouging. On the other, I've seen the operational chaos rush orders cause—maybe they're justified. Either way, rush does not cancel the approval step.
Common mistakes and notes
- Do not accept “within industry standard” as a cover for a visible miss. Delta E 2-4 is noticeable to trained observers; above 4 is visible to most people. Reference: Pantone Color Matching System guidelines.
- Do not assume every ink and paper combination behaves the same. Test before you commit a full Komori offset run.
- If you are asking can you use an inkjet printer for sublimation, yes, some inkjet printers can be converted for sublimation. But the color workflow, ICC profiles, transfer paper, and substrates are different from Komori offset. Do not use the same proofing assumptions.
- Small orders: When I was starting out, the vendors who treated my $200 orders seriously are the ones I still use for $20,000 orders. Small does not mean unimportant.
- Time check: color tolerance and paper references above are current as of January 2025. Verify current standards with Pantone and your substrate supplier, because formulations and availability can change.
