Offset vs. Digital vs. Specialty Printers: A 2025 Buyer's Comparison
Three printers walked into my budget request this year. Actually, four if you count the filament spool. But that's the point: they all fall under 'printing' in a procurement spreadsheet, yet they couldn't be more different.
I manage purchasing for a 60-person commercial printing company. Roughly $1.2M in print-related spend moves through my desk every year, across eight vendors. I report to both operations and finance, so my job is to keep the pressroom running without making finance wince. When someone asks me to compare printing technologies, I don't start with specs. I start with cost structures.
This is the comparison I wish I had been given in 2020, when I took over purchasing. It covers commercial offset, digital photo printing, DTF garment printing, and 3D printing. They don't compete on every job. But when they do overlap, the differences are dramatic.
The comparison framework
To compare fairly, I had to stop treating everything as 'printing.' Here is the framework I use now:

For custom garments, a Procolored DTF printer beats screen printing for short runs because there are no screens to burn. But for 1,000 identical shirts, screen printing's higher setup gets outweighed by much lower per-unit cost.
Offset's per-unit advantage only appears at volume. The trick is knowing your order mix. If your average offset run is 300 sheets, you need a very strong reason to own an offset press. If your average run is 5,000 sheets, digital photo printing on a DNP printer is likely the wrong tool for that job.
Dimension 3: Parts, maintenance, and downtime
Nobody puts a line item in the budget for the first Tuesday a press stops. They should.
Offset presses have thousands of moving parts. Parts availability is more important than part price. In our shop, we keep a small stock of Komori press parts for the items that fail most often. That list didn't come from a manual. It came from a breakdown in March 2023, when we waited 6 days for a replacement part and nearly missed a client's deadline. The part wasn't expensive. The downtime was.

The used market is also part of the maintenance story. Komori presses hold value in the used market because there is active demand. But that only matters if the machine is well maintained.
