Why I'd Rather Re-Check a Komori Press Than Rework a Job

My View: Most Press Problems Aren't Mechanical Failures

I believe most press failures aren't equipment failures. They're check failures. That might sound blunt, but after years of watching jobs go sideways, I'm convinced the majority of expensive problems—misregistration, ink piling, blanket damage—start with a skipped verification step.

I work as a quality/compliance manager at a commercial printing equipment company that handles Komori presses and parts. I review every unit before it reaches customers—roughly 200+ unique items a year, from a complete Komori offset printing machine to a small spare parts kit. I've rejected first deliveries in 2024 due to alignment issues that a 10-minute pre-shipment check should have caught. That experience has made me a firm believer in prevention over cure.

The 10-Minute Habit That Saves Days

In our Q1 2024 quality audit, we tracked every warranty service call for a three-month stretch. The biggest cause wasn't failed bearings or worn cylinders. It was set-up issues: a loose sensor bracket, a wrong blanket pressure reading, an incorrectly zeroed feeder. All of those can be caught by a Komori press operator during a routine pre-job check.

Every press needs contextual adjustment for the actual paper, ink, press speed, and shop environment. Skipping those adjustments to hit a production start time is how new-equipment issues begin.

What most people don't realize is that 'factory calibration' is a starting point, not a guarantee. I've seen a well-maintained used Komori out-produce a new one, simply because operators knew every quirk of the old machine and were still learning the new one. The machine is only as reliable as the checks around it.

The Same Logic Applies to UV and Resin Printers

This prevention mindset isn't exclusive to offset. Take a UV printer—a machine that cures ink instantly using ultraviolet light. If the UV lamp power drops even slightly, prints may look cured but fail abrasion or adhesion tests a day later. Checking lamp intensity and cure dosage before the shift is cheap. Rejecting a whole pallet of printed parts is not.

In simple terms, it's an inkjet printer that uses UV light to instantly cure specially formulated inks, allowing printing on rigid materials like plastic, wood, and metal. The key point isn't the technology—it's that the same rule applies: inspect the curing system before you trust it.

Likewise, with a DLP resin 3D printer (the kind that projects light to cure resin layer by layer), a 0.1 mm error in Z-axis home can ruin every print on the plate. A calibration test takes 15 minutes. A failed production run costs hours. I've seen both.

Most of those cases aren't software failures—they're skipped steps: firewall blocking, wrong driver version, a cable that looks connected but isn't. Operator Training Is the Cheapest Insurance

A skilled Komori press operator is worth more than an extended warranty. The best operators I meet don't rely on memory: they use a written checklist, they log adjustments, and they double-check the first OK sheet against the proof. That's not lack of trust. That's respect for the process.

I went back and forth on whether to require formal certification training for a customer's new Lithrone crew. The numbers said their existing experience was enough—they'd been printing for decades. My gut said their experience was on a different model. We required the training. A month later, that decision prevented a $15,000 impression roller mistake. The data was right about the crew. My gut was right about the context.

The vendor will fix the machine eventually, but the warranty doesn't cover lost production, missed deadlines, or the cost of reprinting 50,000 unacceptable units. It covers parts and maybe labor. It doesn't cover customer trust.

Second: 'You can't check everything—it slows you down.' True, if you treat all checks equally. The trick is to know which checks matter at each stage. Color verification, for example:

Checking that on a proof is 30 seconds. Ignoring it is a whole press stop.

Similarly, resolution checks are quick. At 300 DPI, a 3000×2000 pixel image prints at 10 inches by 6.67 inches. If the spec calls for a 12-inch-wide cover, that image will be soft. Catching that before plates are made is prevention. Catching it after proof is correction—with a deadline attached.

Prevention Is Boring. It's Also Profitable.

After four years of reviewing deliverables and too many root-cause analyses, I'm convinced of this: the cheapest fix is the one that never has to happen. A Komori press is a precision machine, but it still depends on humans who verify what they think they know.

Check the ink. Check the pressure. Check the first sheet. That's it.

Next time you're tempted to skip the pre-press check, ask yourself which costs more: ten minutes on the front end or five days of rework. For me, that answer never changes.
