Why a Used Komori Offset Printing Machine Still Makes Sense in a Digital Print Shop

I'd Rather Trust a Used Komori Press Than a 'Guaranteed' Digital Estimate

Most print buyers ask the wrong question. They ask, 'Is offset printing dead?' They should ask—or rather, I wish they'd ask—'Which process gives me the highest certainty that this job ships on time and matches the proof?' In my experience, the answer is often a used Komori offset printing machine.

I'm the quality and compliance manager at a commercial printing company. Over the past four years, I've reviewed roughly 200 unique jobs annually before they reach customers. In Q1 2024 alone, I rejected 6% of first deliveries because of color variance or registration issues. That number sounds small, but it cost us two clients and about $22,000 in rework. After that, I stopped caring about what was 'new' and started caring about what was predictable.

Digital Isn't Always Faster, and 'Estimated' Isn't a Deadline

Everyone wants to compare offset vs digital as if speed were the only variable. The truth is messier. A digital press has no plates and no makeready, but it still has a RIP, a fuser, ink heads, and a queue of jobs. In a busy shop, a 500-piece job on a digital press can sit for hours before it prints.

This is where the difference between inkjet and laser printer technology confuses people. In office copiers, a laser printer uses toner and heat; an inkjet sprays liquid ink. In production, the same distinction matters, but there are more variables. A production inkjet press can be very fast, but if the profile isn't dialed in, you get streaky solids or color that shifts under different lighting. A toner-based laser press can be consistent, but its gamut is narrower than offset for many Pantone-brand colors.

Used Komori Presses With KHS Are More Predictable Than People Assume

I didn't always think this way. In 2022, I pushed my company to buy a newer digital press over a used Komori. I thought digital would save us time. Instead, about 12% of the digital jobs needed reprints because of color shifts between runs. Meanwhile, our older offset press kept turning out sheets that were within Delta E < 2 of the proof. I changed my mind.

When we finally bought a used Komori Lithrone with the KHS Komori Hyper System offset printing package, makeready time dropped dramatically. On a typical four-color job, we went from 45 minutes of setup to around 18 minutes. Actually, it was closer to 20 if you count the wash-up. That's not just speed—it's certainty. We could quote a delivery time and meet it. The press was used, but it had a documented maintenance history and the spare parts supply is solid. I should add that we budgeted for parts and service after the purchase; that's part of the real cost.

Here's what a quality person cares about: repeatability. A brand color needs to look the same on page 4 and page 44, and it needs to look the same if we reprint the job six months later. Offset presses, especially a well-maintained Komori, give me that repeatability. Digital has improved, but for many brand-critical colors, it's still not there.

Industry standard color tolerance is Delta E < 2 for brand-critical colors. Delta E of 2–4 is noticeable to trained observers; above 4 is visible to most people.

The Real Cost of a Press Includes Everything That Happens After the Sale

I've learned to calculate total cost of ownership, not just the purchase price. A new digital press may have a lower upfront service contract for the first three years, but consumables add up. A used offset press needs a thorough inspection, possibly new rollers, and calibration time. Both are investments. One offers a known monthly cost; the other offers lower per-sheet cost on high-volume runs. Neither is automatically better.

What makes a used Komori attractive isn't the sticker price alone. It's the combination of lower acquisition cost, solid parts availability, and the KHS system's ability to cut waste during setup. In a quality department, that translates to fewer rejected sheets and happier customers.

When Dye Sublimation and DTF Make Sense—and When They Don't

I'm not a textile specialist, so I can't speak to fabric production in depth. What I can tell you is that the Epson dye sublimation printer and the UniNet DTF printer we bought for our transfer department are great tools—for the right jobs. Dye sub is excellent for full-color polyester fabric and soft signage. DTF handles custom transfers on tricky materials like nylon or blends.

Neither of them is the right tool for a client's annual report that needs spot color accuracy on uncoated paper. Some buyers get burned by trying to use a DTF printer for something it wasn't designed for, then blaming the technology. That isn't the technology's fault. It's a tool selection problem.

Most buyers focus on the machine price and completely miss the cost of calibration, spare parts, and operator training. The question everyone asks is, 'Can it print fast?' The question they should ask is, 'Can it print fast twice in a row with the same color?'

I Went Back and Forth—Then I Chose Certainty

I went back and forth between buying another digital press and a used Komori for two weeks. Digital offered speed on paper; used offset offered lower per-sheet cost on large runs and better color consistency. I kept asking myself: is the digital advantage worth the risk of another $22,000 rework? In the end, I chose the used Komori because the downside of missing a deadline felt catastrophic.

Calculating the worst case helped. Worst case: a complete redo at $3,500 and a lost client. Best case: saves $800 on that one order. The expected value said digital, but the downside was too ugly to accept. So we paid for certainty instead.

But Aren't Used Presses a Gamble?

I'm not a press engineer, so I can't speak to every bearing and roller. What I can tell you from a quality perspective is that risk comes from unknown history, not from the word 'used.' We had our used Komori inspected by an independent technician before purchase. We asked for maintenance logs, and we confirmed that the KHS system was still supported. It wasn't a gamble; it was a verified purchase.

The Most Expensive Thing Is a Deadline You Can't Meet

In March 2024, we paid a $400 rush charge to a finisher to get a job bound overnight. The alternative was missing a $15,000 event. The $400 wasn't for speed. It was for certainty. The same logic applies to presses. A used Komori with a good maintenance history isn't about being cheap—it's about knowing the press will run when you need it.

I'm not saying digital is bad. I'm not saying every shop should buy a used press. What I am saying is that in an emergency, 'probably' is the most dangerous word in printing. If you can't verify the machine's history, if you can't get parts, if the operator doesn't know the press—none of that technology helps you.

This view was accurate as of early 2025. The press market changes, so verify current parts availability and maintenance records before committing. But for my money, a used Komori offset printing machine is still the most certain path to hitting a deadline. I'd rather have that certainty than a shiny new machine that 'should' work.
