Three things: model. Serial number. Current configuration. In that order.

The serial number matters more than the model name. A 2014 machine and a 2018 machine can both be called Lithrone, but a newer-style part won't always fit the older frame.

The configuration part is easy to miss. If a previous owner or your own shop installed a retrofit or an upgrade, the standard part may not be the right part. I know this because I once ignored it: I knew I should check the serial number before ordering a roller, but thought 'how different can a roller be?' It was different. $640 and a week of downtime later, I learned to spend two minutes checking first.

Step 2: Look up the part number, not the part name

Call or message the supplier and ask: 'Is this the current revision for serial number R-12345?' If they hesitate, ask them to check. I only started doing this after ordering a $900 motor mount for a Lithrone that had a factory retrofit. The bracket had the right shape, but the bolt holes didn't line up. The supplier didn't know about the retrofit because I hadn't told them.

Step 4: Confirm substrate and color requirements before you buy consumables

This one is less about spare parts and more about the stuff that touches the paper. Blankets, rollers, and inks all behave differently on different substrates. If you order based on '80 lb paper,' be specific: 80 lb text is 120 gsm, while 80 lb cover is 216 gsm. That's a big difference.

Color is the same. Industry standard tolerance for brand-critical colors is Delta E < 2 (Pantone Color Matching System guidelines). A change in substrate or press calibration can push a match outside that range even if the ink formula is correct. Pantone 286 C converts to roughly C:100 M:66 Y:0 K:2, but the printed result will vary by stock and press conditions.

So ask for the actual paper brand and weight before ordering ink or blankets. I once approved an order for a premium brochure job without checking whether it was 100 lb text or 100 lb cover. It was cover. The extra stiffness changed the blanket pressure on the second unit. Not a huge disaster, but it cost us a make-ready that didn't need to exist.

Step 5: Verify image resolution before you blame the press

Here's a common one: a customer sends a file that looks okay on screen, the job prints soft, and the press gets blamed. The file was the problem.

Commercial offset printing standard is 300 DPI at final size. Large-format posters are usually fine at 150 DPI. Newsprint can run around 170-200 DPI. These aren't suggestions; they are minimums.

The formula I use: max print size (inches) = pixel dimensions ÷ DPI. A 3000 × 2000 pixel image at 300 DPI is 10 × 6.67 inches max. If the customer wants an 11 × 17 piece printed at 300 DPI, that image doesn't have enough data. It'll look okay on a 72 DPI screen and fuzzy in print.

I check this before committing to a date, not after loading the plates. This is a checklist step, not a debate with the customer.

Step 6: Check lead time before you promise a date

A part can be right, correct revision, perfect condition. If it's not there in time, it's still a failure.

Every time I search for Komori printing machine spare parts, I ask about stock and availability. I don't assume 'genuine parts warehouse' means 'next day.' Some items are common; some are built to order.

The expensive lesson for me was a $3,200 parts order. The part was correct, but the supplier's standard lead time was 10 business days, and I'd told the customer 5. I paid $340 for air freight to fix my own planning mistake. The part didn't fail; my timeline did.

Step 7: Write it down before you install it

He had changed a roller and written it down. The log was the only reason we found the note. That was the moment I stopped treating documentation as someone else's job.

Update it before walking away, not at the end of the month. And take a photo of the part tag before it goes on the press. You'll thank yourself when the same issue comes back in six months.

Final notes: the order matters

This checklist has no dramatic ending. It is seven boring steps that work. The order matters too: model and serial first, part number second, revision third, consumable compatibility fourth, file resolution fifth, lead time sixth, documentation last.

Some of this is common sense. The parts I've wasted money on were almost always ordered when I skipped a step because I was in a hurry. In a print shop, every hour of downtime is money. But the wrong part costs more than an hour. It costs a week.
