The Obvious vs. The Invisible

Most buyers focus on per-unit pricing and completely miss setup fees, shipping, consumables, and calibration costs that can add 30–50% to the total. For a Komori printing press, the real cost includes installation, training, parts inventory, and downtime during commissioning. For a 3D printer, it's filament, build plates, nozzles, and software licenses.

The question everyone asks is “What’s your best price?” The question they should ask is “What's included in that price?”

Why “Specs” Are Never Just Specs

It's tempting to think identical specs mean identical results. But two machines that claim the same resolution or speed can perform wildly differently. I once saw a buyer compare a used Komori Lithrone to a rebuilt Heidelberg based on “prints per hour.” On paper, they were close. How to Buy Smart—Offset or 3D

Here’s what I do now, and it works for both traditional and additive printing:

  1. Ask for a total cost breakdown. Line items for delivery, installation, training, spare parts, and consumables for the first 6 months.
  2. Specify a measurable quality standard. For offset, Delta E < 2 and registration within 0.1mm. For 3D, ask for dimensional accuracy in writing and a test print before full production.
  3. Check what’s NOT included. That “free shipping” offer might be ground freight with a 4-week lead time. Rush fees can double the price.
  4. Test the vendor’s honesty. Give them a simple scenario: “I need 1,000 copies of a 4-color brochure with a spot Pantone, printed on 100 lb cover, delivered in 5 days.” If they quote without asking about bleeds, file format, or finishing, run.

The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end. I’ve learned that the hard way. My advice: take it from someone who has rejected more deliveries than most people have ordered.

Industry standard for commercial offset printing: 300 DPI at final size, Delta E < 2 for brand colors. These aren’t optional; they’re the bare minimum.
